Almonds

Caution

Verdict

Not recommended — choking hazard and GI risk.

Verdict

Almonds are not severely toxic to dogs, but they are difficult to digest, can cause gastric obstruction, and pose a significant choking hazard — especially for small dogs. Salted or flavored almonds add the risks of sodium toxicity or harmful additives. Dogs do not benefit nutritionally from almonds in any meaningful way.

Symptoms to watch for

  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • lethargy
  • choking or gagging
  • signs of obstruction (unproductive retching)

What to do

Monitor your dog if a few plain almonds were eaten. Contact your vet if your dog is retching, seems in pain, or if large quantities were consumed. Keep all nuts out of reach.
