Apple

Safe

Verdict

Yes — remove core, seeds, and stem first.

Verdict

Apple flesh is a great source of fiber, vitamin C, and vitamin A, and is low in calories. However, the seeds contain amygdalin (a cyanide-releasing compound), and the core and stem can be choking hazards. A few slices with all seeds and core removed are completely safe and enjoyable. Unsweetened applesauce (no xylitol) is also fine.

Symptoms to watch for

  • none from flesh — seeds can cause cyanide toxicity in large amounts

What to do

Always remove the core, seeds, and stem. A few slices of apple flesh are a great treat. Offer peeled or unpeeled (skin is fine). Avoid apple-flavored products with added sugar.
