Apple Seeds

Toxic

Verdict

Seeds are toxic — apple flesh is safe.

Toxic principle: amygdalin (cyanide)
Source: ASPCA

Verdict

Apple seeds contain amygdalin, which releases cyanide when chewed or digested. A few accidentally swallowed seeds are unlikely to cause harm because the cyanide release is small, but regularly feeding apple cores or large amounts of seeds could cause toxicity. Always core apples and remove all seeds before giving to your dog.

Symptoms to watch for

  • excessive panting
  • shock
  • pale gums
  • seizures (in large exposures)

What to do

If your dog ate a small amount of apple flesh with a few incidental seeds, monitor for symptoms. If a large quantity of seeds was consumed, contact your vet. Always remove core, seeds, and stem before feeding apple to dogs.
