Banana

Safe

Verdict

Yes — good occasional treat, but high in sugar.

Verdict

Bananas are safe for dogs and provide potassium, vitamins B6 and C, and fiber. However, they are relatively high in sugar compared to other dog-safe fruits, so they should be offered in moderation — a few slices, not a whole banana. The peel is not toxic but is difficult to digest and best avoided. Frozen banana slices are a refreshing warm-weather treat.

Symptoms to watch for

  • constipation or GI upset with very large amounts

What to do

Offer a few slices as an occasional treat. Remove the peel. Limit to a small fraction of daily caloric intake, especially for small dogs or diabetic dogs.
