Caution

Verdict

Small amounts OK — avoid raw dough and flavored varieties.

Verdict

Plain, baked white or whole wheat bread is not toxic to dogs in small amounts, but it provides little nutritional value and contributes to weight gain. The main dangers are raw/unbaked dough (yeast poisoning and bloat), and flavored breads containing raisins, onions, garlic, or nuts — all of which are toxic. Garlic bread is a common offender.

Symptoms to watch for

  • weight gain with regular feeding
  • GI upset with large amounts
  • see raw yeast dough entry for dough risks

What to do

A bite of plain bread is generally fine. Keep all raw/rising dough completely away from dogs. Never share garlic bread, raisin bread, or any bread with toxic seasonings.
