Brussels Sprouts

Safe

Verdict

Yes — safe, but causes significant gas.

Verdict

Brussels sprouts are safe and nutritious for dogs, providing vitamins K, C, B1, B6, and fiber. The downside is significant: they contain isothiocyanates and raffinose sugars that cause substantial gas and bloating. While not harmful, the flatulence can be uncomfortable for your dog (and you). Lightly steaming reduces the gas-producing effect somewhat.

Symptoms to watch for

  • gas and flatulence
  • bloating
  • loose stool in excess

What to do

Cook them (steamed or boiled, no seasoning) and serve in small amounts. Do not make them a large part of the diet. If your dog has a sensitive stomach, skip them in favor of gentler vegetables.
