Chives

Toxic

Verdict

Never — allium toxin, same risk as onion and garlic.

Toxic principle: thiosulfate
Source: ASPCA

Verdict

Chives are members of the allium family and contain the same thiosulfate compounds as onion and garlic. They cause oxidative damage to red blood cells, leading to hemolytic anemia. Chives are sometimes used as garnishes or in butter, so be vigilant about what your dog has access to.

Symptoms to watch for

  • lethargy
  • vomiting
  • pale gums
  • increased heart rate
  • weakness

What to do

Contact your vet promptly, especially if large amounts were ingested. All allium plants (onion, garlic, chives, leeks, scallions) carry the same risk.
