Chocolate

Toxic

Verdict

Never — toxic, potentially fatal in large amounts.

Toxic principle: theobromine, caffeine
Source: ASPCA

Verdict

Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which dogs metabolize far more slowly than humans. Toxic effects depend on the type and amount: dark chocolate and baking chocolate are far more dangerous than milk chocolate. A 50 lb dog can be killed by as little as 1 oz of baker's chocolate. White chocolate contains little theobromine but is still unsafe.

Symptoms to watch for

  • muscle tremors
  • seizures

What to do

Contact your vet or ASPCA Poison Control (888-426-4435) immediately. Have the chocolate type and estimated weight consumed ready. Do not wait for symptoms — early treatment (inducing vomiting, activated charcoal) is far more effective.
