Verdict

Coconut flesh and coconut oil contain medium-chain fatty acids that can cause diarrhea, loose stools, and GI upset when eaten in significant quantities. Small amounts are not harmful. Coconut water is high in potassium and should be avoided. The shell is a choking hazard. Coconut oil, when used topically or in very small amounts, is generally safe.

Symptoms to watch for

  • loose stool
  • diarrhea
  • bloating (with large amounts)

What to do

Small amounts of plain coconut flesh as a treat are generally fine. Avoid coconut water and large portions. If diarrhea occurs, withhold and return to normal diet. Consult your vet if GI symptoms persist.
