Corn Kernels

Safe

Verdict

Yes (off the cob only) — the cob is the danger.

Verdict

Plain corn kernels — removed from the cob — are safe for dogs and are a common ingredient in commercial dog foods. They provide carbohydrates, fiber, protein, linoleic acid, and B vitamins. The critical rule: corn ON the cob is dangerous because the cob can cause intestinal obstruction (see corn on the cob entry). Kernels should be plain, with no butter, salt, or sauces.

Symptoms to watch for

  • none from plain kernels — digestive upset only if large amounts

What to do

Cut or scrape kernels off the cob before serving. Serve plain without butter or salt. A small amount as a treat is fine. Never let your dog chew on a corn cob — the obstruction risk is real even with a small piece.
