Cranberries

Caution

Verdict

Small amounts OK — large amounts cause stomach upset.

Verdict

Fresh or dried cranberries are not toxic to dogs, but large amounts can cause GI upset due to acidity. Dried cranberries frequently contain added sugar. Cranberry products marketed for UTI prevention in humans (juice, supplements) are often very sugary and not appropriate for dogs.

Symptoms to watch for

  • stomach upset with large amounts
  • diarrhea
  • gas

What to do

A few cranberries as a treat are fine. Avoid cranberry juice (too much sugar) and large amounts of dried cranberries. If your dog has urinary issues, consult your vet about appropriate treatment — don't self-treat with cranberry products.
