Dates
CautionVerdict
Not toxic — but very high in sugar; remove the pit.

Verdict
Dates are not poisonous to dogs, but they are extremely high in sugar and calories, making them unsuitable for regular feeding. The pit (stone) must be removed as it is a choking hazard and can cause intestinal obstruction. Regular feeding can contribute to obesity, dental disease, and blood sugar dysregulation in diabetic dogs.
Symptoms to watch for
- • diarrhea and GI upset with multiple dates
- • weight gain with regular feeding
- • choking (pit)
What to do
An occasional single date (pit removed) is unlikely to harm a healthy dog. Do not give dates to diabetic or overweight dogs. Remove the pit entirely before offering. Choose lower-sugar fruits as regular treats.
