Verdict

Fresh or dried ginger in small amounts is safe for dogs and may have anti-nausea and anti-inflammatory properties. It can be helpful for dogs prone to motion sickness. However, large amounts can cause heartburn, GI upset, and potentially affect blood pressure or platelet function. A small pinch or thin slice is all that is needed.

Symptoms to watch for

  • heartburn or stomach upset with excessive amounts

What to do

Offer a tiny sliver of fresh ginger or a pinch of powdered ginger as needed. Do not give large amounts. If using ginger for motion sickness, speak to your vet about appropriate dosing for your dog's weight.
