Verdict

Grapefruit contains psoralens (furocoumarins) and essential oils limonene and linalool that are toxic to dogs, concentrated primarily in the peel, seeds, and white pith. GI upset, CNS depression, and photosensitivity can result. Even the juice can cause stomach upset. The entire fruit should be kept away from dogs.

Symptoms to watch for

  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • lethargy
  • trembling
  • skin sensitivity to sunlight (with peel exposure)

What to do

Keep grapefruit away from dogs. If your dog ate grapefruit peel or a large amount of fruit, contact your vet. A small accidental nibble of flesh is unlikely to cause severe harm but avoid any further exposure.
