Ice Cream

Caution

Verdict

Avoid — sugar, dairy, and potential xylitol risk.

Toxic principle: xylitol (if present), sugar
Source: ASPCA

Verdict

Ice cream combines high sugar content with dairy (causing GI upset in lactose-intolerant dogs) and is often made with dangerous flavors: chocolate, raisins, macadamia nuts, or coffee. Some low-sugar or sugar-free varieties contain xylitol, which is deadly. Specialty 'dog ice cream' products made from safe ingredients are a better option.

Symptoms to watch for

  • diarrhea
  • vomiting
  • bloating
  • xylitol symptoms if applicable

What to do

Keep regular ice cream away from dogs. If your dog ate ice cream, check the flavor and ingredients for xylitol, chocolate, grapes, or other toxins. If a dangerous ingredient was present, call your vet. Otherwise, monitor for GI upset.
