Kale

Caution

Verdict

Very small amounts only — isothiocyanates and oxalates are concerning.

Toxic principle: isothiocyanates, oxalates
Source: ASPCA

Verdict

Kale contains isothiocyanates (GI irritants), oxalates (kidney stone risk), and calcium oxalate crystals. It is also a goitrogen, potentially affecting thyroid function with regular feeding. While a small piece of kale is unlikely to harm a healthy dog, it is not an ideal food and should not be fed regularly or in large amounts.

Symptoms to watch for

  • gas and GI discomfort
  • vomiting (larger amounts)
  • urinary crystals (chronic)

What to do

Occasional small amounts are not an emergency. Do not include kale as a regular part of a dog's diet. Dogs with kidney disease or thyroid conditions should avoid kale.
