Lemons

Caution

Verdict

Avoid — essential oils and citric acid cause GI upset.

Toxic principle: limonene, linalool, psoralens
Source: ASPCA

Verdict

Lemons contain limonene, linalool, and psoralen (furocoumarin) in the peel and rind. These essential oils and compounds cause GI irritation, vomiting, and central nervous system depression in dogs. The flesh and juice are very acidic and unpalatable; most dogs avoid lemons instinctively. Large amounts of the peel or oil are more concerning than the juice.

Symptoms to watch for

  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • drooling
  • lethargy
  • sensitivity to light (psoralens in skin)

What to do

Keep lemons and lemon products away from dogs. If your dog ate a large amount of lemon peel or lemon oil, contact your vet. A small accidental lick of lemon juice is unlikely to cause serious harm.
