Milk

Caution

Verdict

Use caution — many dogs are lactose intolerant.

Source: ASPCA

Verdict

Dogs produce low levels of lactase (the enzyme that digests lactose) after puppyhood. Cow's milk can therefore cause digestive upset, including gas, diarrhea, and vomiting. Some dogs tolerate small amounts of milk, but it is generally not recommended as a regular treat. Goat's milk has slightly lower lactose and may be better tolerated.

Symptoms to watch for

  • diarrhea
  • gas and bloating
  • vomiting
  • loose stool

What to do

If your dog drank a small amount of milk and shows signs of GI upset, restrict food briefly and provide water. There is no emergency, but avoid giving milk regularly. If symptoms are severe, consult your vet.
