Store-bought safe — wild mushrooms potentially deadly.
Toxic principle: varies by species

Verdict
Commercially grown mushrooms (white button, portobello, cremini, shiitake) are generally non-toxic for dogs. The severe danger comes from wild mushrooms — species like Amanita phalloides (death cap) and Amanita ocreata are lethal to both dogs and humans. Because toxic wild species are difficult to distinguish from safe ones, dogs should be kept away from any mushrooms growing outdoors.
Symptoms to watch for
- • vomiting and diarrhea
- • excessive salivation
- • weakness
- • seizures
- • liver failure (Amanita species)
- • coma
What to do
If your dog ate wild mushrooms, treat it as a poisoning emergency and call your vet or ASPCA Poison Control (888-426-4435) immediately. Try to photograph or sample the mushroom if safe to do so. Plain store-bought mushrooms need no special action.
