Oranges

Caution

Verdict

Flesh OK in small amounts — peel and seeds are a risk.

Toxic principle: limonene, linalool (peel)
Source: ASPCA

Verdict

Orange flesh is not toxic to dogs and is a source of vitamin C and natural sugars. However, the peel, white pith, and seeds contain essential oils (limonene, linalool) and compounds that can cause vomiting and GI upset. Oranges are also high in sugar and acidity, so they should be an occasional small treat, not a regular snack. Some dogs simply dislike the smell.

Symptoms to watch for

  • vomiting (peel or large amounts)
  • diarrhea
  • GI upset

What to do

Remove all peel, pith, and seeds before offering a small segment. Do not give orange juice (too much concentrated sugar). A segment or two is fine; a whole orange is too much.
