Peach

Safe

Verdict

Yes (flesh only) — pit contains cyanide.

Source: ASPCA

Verdict

Peach flesh is a sweet, juicy source of vitamins A and C, fiber, and antioxidants. The pit (stone), leaves, and stem contain amygdalin (cyanide-releasing compound) and are toxic — the pit is also a severe choking and obstruction hazard. Canned peaches are safe only if packed in their own juice with no added syrup or preservatives.

Symptoms to watch for

  • cyanide symptoms from pit: dilated pupils, bright red gums, seizures

What to do

Remove the pit, leaves, and stem completely. Cut flesh into bite-sized pieces. A few pieces are a great summer treat. Never give your dog a whole peach to chew on. Avoid canned peaches in syrup.
