Peanut Butter

Caution

Verdict

OK if xylitol-free — always check the label.

Toxic principle: xylitol (if present)
Source: ASPCA

Verdict

Plain peanut butter made from just peanuts (and sometimes salt) is generally safe for dogs and is a popular treat. The critical danger is xylitol — some brands use it as a sweetener and it is deadly to dogs. Always read the ingredient list before every jar. Peanut butter is also high in fat, so it should be fed in moderation; excess can trigger pancreatitis.

Symptoms to watch for

  • xylitol symptoms if applicable: sudden weakness, seizures
  • vomiting (fat overload)
  • diarrhea

What to do

Always check the label for xylitol before feeding. If xylitol is an ingredient, treat it as a poisoning emergency (888-426-4435). For plain peanut butter, a teaspoon as an occasional treat is fine for most dogs.
