Pear

Safe

Verdict

Yes (flesh and skin OK) — remove core and seeds.

Source: ASPCA

Verdict

Pear flesh and skin are safe, nutritious, and a good source of vitamins C and K and fiber. Like apples, the seeds contain amygdalin (a cyanide precursor) and must be removed along with the core. Pears are high in natural sugar, so moderation is appropriate, especially for diabetic dogs.

Symptoms to watch for

  • none from flesh/skin
  • cyanide symptoms from seeds in large amounts

What to do

Core the pear and remove all seeds. Slice flesh into pieces. Both the flesh and skin are safe to eat. A few slices as a treat is appropriate. Choose ripe pears — very unripe pears can cause GI upset.
