Verdict

Green peas (fresh, frozen, or low-sodium canned) are a nutritious dog-safe food high in protein, fiber, vitamins A, B, and K, and minerals. They are used in many grain-free dog foods. Avoid canned peas with added salt. Pea pods are also safe but tougher. Do not feed dogs peas if they have kidney issues (high purine content).

Symptoms to watch for

  • none expected for healthy dogs

What to do

Fresh, frozen, or low-sodium canned peas are fine as treats or food toppers. Avoid high-sodium canned varieties. If your dog has kidney disease, ask your vet before feeding peas (purines can worsen kidney function).
