Pineapple

Safe

Verdict

Yes — flesh is safe; remove core and skin.

Verdict

Fresh pineapple is safe for dogs in small amounts and contains vitamins, minerals, and bromelain (a digestive enzyme). The core is tough and fibrous (choking risk), and the spiky outer skin is inedible and could injure a dog. Canned pineapple is safe only if packed in juice (no syrup). Pineapple is high in natural sugars, so moderate portions are best.

Symptoms to watch for

  • diarrhea with large portions due to high sugar
  • potential GI upset from core

What to do

Remove the skin and core. Cut fresh flesh into small chunks. A few pieces as a treat are great. Avoid canned in syrup. Limit for diabetic or overweight dogs.
