Popcorn
SafeVerdict
Plain air-popped is fine — avoid butter, salt, and flavorings.
Verdict
Plain, air-popped popcorn with no additives is not toxic to dogs and contains trace amounts of fiber, vitamins, and minerals. The issue is what's added: butter, salt, artificial flavorings, caramel, and cheese coatings are all harmful. Unpopped or partially popped kernels are also a choking hazard. Movie popcorn or microwave popcorn is typically not suitable for dogs.
Symptoms to watch for
- • none from plain popcorn
- • GI upset, sodium toxicity from flavored/salted popcorn
What to do
Offer only plain, air-popped popcorn in small amounts. Remove any unpopped kernels. Keep the butter and salt for yourself.
