Potato
CautionVerdict
Raw potatoes are toxic — cooked plain potato is OK in moderation.
Toxic principle: solanine (raw/green)
Source: ASPCA
Verdict
Raw and green potatoes contain solanine, a toxic alkaloid that causes GI irritation and neurological symptoms. Potato leaves, stems, and unripe green potatoes are especially high in solanine. Fully cooked, plain potatoes (no skin, no butter, no seasoning) are generally safe in small amounts. Avoid any green areas of the flesh even on cooked potatoes.
Symptoms to watch for
- • vomiting
- • diarrhea
- • lethargy
- • weakness
- • confusion (solanine poisoning)
What to do
Do not feed raw, green, or seasoned potatoes. Plain boiled or baked potato flesh in small amounts is fine as an occasional treat. Sweet potatoes are a healthier alternative.
