Verdict

Plain cooked or canned pumpkin (100% pumpkin, no spices, no sugar) is one of the best dietary supplements for dogs with GI issues. High fiber content helps regulate both diarrhea and constipation. It is also rich in vitamin A, potassium, and zinc. Seeds are also safe (plain, cleaned). Pumpkin pie filling is NOT safe — it contains spices and sugar.

Symptoms to watch for

  • none from plain pumpkin

What to do

Add 1–4 tablespoons of plain canned pumpkin to food for GI support. Ensure the can says '100% pumpkin' with no added spices or sugar. Avoid pumpkin pie filling (contains nutmeg and other spices).
