Verdict

Raisins are dried grapes and contain the same unknown toxin in a much more concentrated form. As few as 6 raisins have caused acute kidney failure in a small dog. The mechanism is not fully understood, but the outcome can be fatal. Currants carry the same risk.

Symptoms to watch for

  • vomiting within hours
  • diarrhea
  • lethargy
  • loss of appetite
  • abdominal pain
  • little or no urine production

What to do

Emergency — call your vet or ASPCA Poison Control (888-426-4435) immediately. Raisins are often hidden in cereals, trail mix, cookies, and baked goods — check the ingredient list.
