Raspberries

Caution

Verdict

Small amounts OK — contain trace natural xylitol.

Toxic principle: trace xylitol
Source: ASPCA

Verdict

Raspberries are low in calories and high in antioxidants, fiber, and vitamin C, making them a reasonable occasional treat. However, raspberries naturally contain very small amounts of xylitol. The amount is far too low to cause toxicity from a few berries, but very large quantities fed regularly are not advisable. Remove any leaves or stems.

Symptoms to watch for

  • mild GI upset with large amounts
  • diarrhea

What to do

A small handful of raspberries as an occasional treat is fine. Do not feed cups of raspberries daily. Monitor for any GI sensitivity in individual dogs.
