Raw Yeast Dough

Toxic

Verdict

Never — expands in the stomach and produces alcohol.

Toxic principle: ethanol, carbon dioxide
Source: ASPCA

Verdict

Unbaked yeast dough continues to rise inside a dog's warm stomach, causing painful bloat and potentially life-threatening gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV). As the yeast ferments, it also produces ethanol that is absorbed directly into the bloodstream, causing alcohol poisoning on top of the bloating.

Symptoms to watch for

  • abdominal distension and pain
  • retching or unproductive vomiting
  • disorientation
  • weakness
  • collapse

What to do

Go to an emergency vet immediately. Gastric dilation is a surgical emergency. Call ASPCA Poison Control (888-426-4435) en route.
