Salmon
SafeVerdict
Yes (cooked only) — do not feed raw salmon.
Verdict
Cooked salmon is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) that support brain, joint, skin, and coat health, plus protein, vitamins B12 and D. Raw salmon and other Pacific Northwest fish can harbor Neorickettsia helminthoeca, the bacteria that causes Salmon Poisoning Disease, a potentially fatal illness unique to dogs (and other canids). Always cook salmon thoroughly.
Symptoms to watch for
- • from raw: vomiting, bloody diarrhea, fever, swollen lymph nodes, death (Salmon Poisoning Disease)
What to do
Always cook salmon thoroughly. Remove all bones (even small ones). No seasonings, butter, or oils. Serve in moderation — it is calorie-dense. If your dog ate raw salmon and develops fever or diarrhea, see a vet immediately — salmon poisoning is an emergency.
