Shrimp

Safe

Verdict

Yes (fully cooked, peeled) — a healthy lean protein.

Source: ASPCA

Verdict

Cooked shrimp is low in calories and fat but high in protein, phosphorus, iodine, antioxidants (astaxanthin), and vitamins B3 and B12. It should be fully cooked (raw shrimp carries bacterial contamination risk), completely peeled (shells are a choking hazard and hard to digest), and served without any seasoning, butter, or cocktail sauce (which often contains onion).

Symptoms to watch for

  • none from plain cooked shrimp
  • allergic reactions possible (shrimp allergy, though rare in dogs)

What to do

Fully cook, peel, devein, remove tails, and serve plain. A few shrimp as an occasional treat or food topper is excellent. Monitor for any signs of shellfish allergy on first introduction (rare but possible).
