Spinach

Caution

Verdict

Very small amounts OK — regular feeding causes kidney stress.

Toxic principle: oxalic acid
Source: ASPCA

Verdict

Spinach contains oxalic acid, which interferes with calcium absorption and, with repeated exposure, can deposit oxalate crystals in the kidneys, leading to kidney damage. A dog would need to eat very large amounts for acute toxicity, but regular feeding of spinach is not recommended. Dogs with existing kidney problems should avoid it entirely.

Symptoms to watch for

  • vomiting
  • lethargy (with large or chronic intake)
  • abnormal urination (chronic)

What to do

An occasional small piece is not a concern for healthy dogs, but do not regularly add spinach to a dog's food. If your dog has kidney disease, avoid completely. Prefer safer greens like kale in small amounts or green beans.
