Tomatoes
CautionVerdict
Ripe red flesh is OK in small amounts — green parts are toxic.
Toxic principle: solanine, tomatine (green parts)
Source: ASPCA
Verdict
The green parts of the tomato plant — stems, leaves, flowers, and unripe (green) tomatoes — contain solanine and tomatine, which are toxic to dogs. Ripe red tomato flesh is considered safe in small quantities and is used in some commercial dog foods. However, the entire green portion of the plant is dangerous, making garden tomatoes a hazard.
Symptoms to watch for
- • GI upset from ripe flesh (mild)
- • vomiting, weakness, tremors, seizures (from green parts/solanine)
What to do
Fence off tomato plants in your garden. A small piece of ripe tomato flesh is generally not a concern. If your dog ate green tomatoes, leaves, or stems, contact your vet.
