Tuna

Caution

Verdict

Occasionally OK — mercury risk with regular feeding.

Toxic principle: mercury (chronic)
Source: ASPCA

Verdict

Plain canned tuna in water (not oil) or cooked fresh tuna is generally safe for dogs in small amounts occasionally. However, tuna is a large predatory fish with higher mercury concentrations. Regular feeding can lead to mercury accumulation. Canned tuna often contains added salt. Avoid tuna packed in oil or with flavorings.

Symptoms to watch for

  • mercury poisoning (chronic): hair loss, loss of coordination, blindness, kidney damage

What to do

Small amounts of plain tuna as an occasional treat (once a week or less) are fine for most dogs. Do not make it a regular part of the diet. Choose tuna packed in water with no added salt. Salmon is a safer fish alternative.
