Walnuts

Caution

Verdict

Avoid — high fat and mold toxin risk.

Toxic principle: juglone, mycotoxins (if moldy)
Source: ASPCA

Verdict

Walnuts, especially black walnuts, pose multiple risks: they are very high in fat (which can trigger pancreatitis), and old or fallen walnuts frequently harbor tremorgenic mycotoxins from Aspergillus mold. Black walnuts contain juglone, which is directly toxic. Even without mold, the high fat content alone makes them inadvisable. Do not let your dog eat nuts from the ground.

Symptoms to watch for

  • vomiting
  • weakness
  • muscle tremors
  • seizures (mold toxin)
  • diarrhea
  • pancreatitis symptoms

What to do

Call your vet, especially if the nuts may have been old or moldy. Even if symptoms seem mild, pancreatitis can develop over 1–2 days. Keep your yard free of fallen nuts if you have walnut trees.
