Watermelon

Safe

Verdict

Yes — hydrating and refreshing; remove seeds and rind.

Verdict

Watermelon flesh is 92% water and a safe, low-calorie, hydrating treat for dogs. It contains lycopene, vitamins A, B6, and C. The seeds and rind should be removed: seeds can cause digestive blockage, and the rind is difficult to digest and may cause GI upset. Seedless varieties are easiest to prepare safely.

Symptoms to watch for

  • GI upset from seeds or rind
  • diarrhea in excess

What to do

Remove all seeds and the rind before serving. Offer flesh only. Cut into bite-sized pieces. Frozen watermelon cubes are a great summer treat. Limit to a moderate portion — not a full meal replacement.
