Yogurt

Caution

Verdict

Small amounts OK — choose plain, no sweeteners.

Verdict

Plain yogurt contains beneficial probiotics and is generally well-tolerated by dogs in small amounts. However, many dogs are lactose-intolerant to varying degrees, and dairy can cause gas, diarrhea, and digestive upset. Flavored yogurts often contain xylitol, large amounts of sugar, or artificial sweeteners — all of which are dangerous. Greek-style plain yogurt with live cultures is the safest choice.

Symptoms to watch for

  • diarrhea
  • gas and bloating
  • vomiting (if lactose intolerant)

What to do

Feed only plain, unsweetened yogurt. Start with a small amount (1 tsp) to test tolerance. Avoid all flavored, sweetened, or artificially sweetened varieties. Never give dogs yogurt with xylitol.
