Verdict
Cinnamon is not classified as toxic to dogs by the ASPCA, but it can irritate the mucous membranes of the mouth and digestive tract, especially in powdered form. Inhaling cinnamon powder can cause coughing, choking, and breathing difficulties. Cinnamon sticks can cause GI irritation. In small amounts used in cooking, it poses minimal risk.
Symptoms to watch for
- • mouth irritation and drooling
- • vomiting
- • diarrhea
- • coughing (inhalation)
- • low blood sugar (very large amounts)
What to do
A small amount of cinnamon in food is generally fine. Keep powdered cinnamon out of reach. If your dog inhaled cinnamon powder, call your vet. Do not purposely add cinnamon to a dog's food.
